World Book Week 2019 : a taste.

Yr2 : Gene Project….Water
Phase 1
Yr2 teachers launched their project by taking their students to visit the National aquarium. After the outing, the children were shown the video ‘Nesploraw it-Tezori tal-bahar ma’ Roger il-Gawwi’. This was used to get the children to think about other types of fish apart from those seen while at the aquarium, particularly those which live in Maltese seas. The children were made aware of how important it is to eat locally caught fresh fish. They also wrote a journal about this video. As a continuation of this, the children also found pictures of these fish and wrote some popular fish recipes.
Phase 2
In the second phase of the project, the year 2 children were shown the video ‘Water walk’ where an African girl speaks about her experience of living without the luxury of having clean water at the turn of a tap in the comfort of her home. They learned how she had to walk for miles to find water. Afterwards, the children also took part in a shared reading session, using the book ‘Ilmina u l-vit tal-iskola’. Through this story, they realised how important water is, its many different uses and above all, how lucky they are to find clean water at school and at home. The importance of saving water was also emphasized. Afterwards, the children had to complete an activity related to the book. As a follow up, the children created a chart related to the importance of water and its uses.
Phase 3
Another part of this project was the water, cinnamon and oil experiment, where the children learned about proper hand washing and cleanliness. The children had some oil and cinnamon put on their hands. Then they were asked to wash their hands but realized that water alone does not remove the germs (the cinnamon). Soap needs to be used as well.
School Day of Peace and Non-violence.
On the 1st of February 2019 our school celebrated the day of Peace and Non-Violence. Students from the ekoskola and school councils joined together in this activity. Mr Paul Sammut HOS and Ms. Jones (anti-bullying teacher) also gave a small speech regarding the fact that we should always keep calm and use non-violent procedures when there is an argument. Both committees participated in the event by quoting people and sayings regarding non-violence and Peace. Peace and non-violence is something that needs to be practiced all year long so that to keep everywhere a safe place to be.
